ADVENT #3 – GOD, THE GOD WHO FORGIVES – SERMON RESOURCES
ENGAGING THE PRACTICAL TIP
This week we delved more deeply into the forgiveness that Jesus offers us. In the challenging story of Luke 7:36-50, we find a ‘sinful woman,’ and an irate Pharisee. In the story, Jesus reveals that both require forgiveness. Read through the story slowly. Where do you place yourself? Use your imagination to envision what it would have been like to be there.
Do you resonate with the woman, who is deeply aware of her need for forgiveness and also profoundly trusts Jesus’ love and forgiveness? Or or do connect with Simon the Pharisee, who is affronted by Jesus’ forgiveness and love for the woman and who has trouble recognizing his own sinfulness?
Do you tend to think of yourself as a law-breaker or a law-keeper?
Are you willing to receive the forgiveness that is available?
Try not to place yourself in the story based on what you think the ‘right’ answer is, but instead, pay attention to the emotions you feel and the thoughts you have as you read the story. Invite God into whatever emotions or thoughts arise, and ask that the Holy Spirit guide you into a more profound appreciation for the love and forgiveness that Jesus offers to each of us. If you do not feel ready or able to accept either your own need for forgiveness or the forgiveness that is offered to you, simply ask God to meet you in exactly the place you find yourself.
