ENGAGING THE PRACTICAL TIP

Surrender is a word we don’t particularly like to hear, especially when it comes to our dearest hopes and dreams. This week, Pastor Donnell challenged us to bring our deepest desires before God in prayer, willing to examine them honestly, or even surrender them. So often, when it comes to the things we long for the most, we hesitate to trust God with them. Instead, we go it alone, furtively trying to make it work by ourselves. We struggle to trust God with these things that are so significant to us. This week, as we begin a new year, let’s begin with a simple act of trust: prayerfully bringing our hopes and dreams before God, trusting the goodness, love, and provision of our Lord.

Begin by finding a comfortable and peaceful place to pray. Spend a few moments in silence, stilling yourself in God’s loving presence. As you feel ready, begin to consider the deepest desires of your heart in the presence of Jesus. As you do so, pay attention to the prompting of the Spirit. Do you feel convicted that you have kept this area of your life separate from your relationship with God? Do you feel peace that God is already at work in this area of your life? Perhaps you even feel fear, wondering whether your desires and God’s are in sync. Whatever thoughts and emotions come up, try to be honest about them in the presence of the one who knows you, loves you, and is always working for your good. When you feel ready, ask for the wisdom to see what one step God might have for you in this area. If you are able, spend a few minutes listening for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you consider how you can increasingly trust God in these most precious areas of your heart.
